The home care teams at Bluebird Care Reading, Wokingham, and Maidenhead took part in a relay race earlier this month to raise money for the national dementia charity.
They initially aimed to raise £1,000, but exceeded their target thanks to the generosity of supporters, who described them as ‘truly inspiring’ and ‘an amazing team’.
Mehul Shah, director at Bluebird Care Reading, Wokingham, Windsor, Bracknell and Maidenhead, said: “The whole team is incredibly proud of what we achieved this day.
“We didn’t just complete the challenge – we came together for a cause that affects so many of the people we care for every day.
“Raising £1,830 is something we’re all thrilled about, and it’s an amazing feeling to be part of the larger £50,000 raised for dementia by care teams like ours across the country.”
The race involved the care teams taking time out of their busy schedules to cycle, run, and walk to carry a dementia pledge from Reading to Windsor Castle.
The pledge was a commitment for Bluebird Care to become the leading provider of specialist dementia care in the community, in light of the growing need for this type of care at home.
The relay began at the Bluebird Care Reading office, where directors Mehul and Tushar Shah kicked off the race, cycling seven miles to meet the rest of the team at the Maidenhead office.
The group of care professionals embarked on a 10-mile walk from Maidenhead to finish at the historic Windsor Castle, where they handed over the baton to their colleagues Charlotte and Lisa.
Team members from across the Bluebird Care services joined the effort, walking alongside each other in a show of unity and support for the important cause.
The number of people with dementia in Reading alone is expected to increase by 18 per cent in the next 10 years, while in Wokingham, there are currently 1,088 people aged 65 and over diagnosed with the disease.
The care team has a strong commitment to making a difference in the communities they serve, and the Alzheimer’s Society relay race was just one of the many ways they aim to provide support beyond their home care services.
The challenge was part of the national Bluebird Care network’s £50,000 fundraising mission.
The fundraising partnership, which is supported by renowned choreographer and Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador Dame Arlene Phillips DBE, aims to support the vital work the charity does for those living with dementia and their families in communities across the UK.
